Proceeds used for increasing literacy rates, decreasing crime, and helping police solve unsolved crimes 
This ground-breaking Book Fair highlighting the connection between illiteracy and high crime rates features dozens of authors who will be signing their books and giving talks on writing, the publishing industry, and other topics of interest throughout the day. Be sure and check out the entire talks schedule, which includes panel discussions, writer's workshops, children's readings and talks, parenting, special focus talks, and more!
Books of all types and genres are included, such as historical, non-fiction, mystery, romance, suspense/thrillers, fantasy, horror, and true crime. There is also a large number of children's authors, ranging from preschool books through the teen years.

Admittance to the annual book event is free. The proceeds from the sale of the books goes to organizations dedicated to increasing literacy rates, decreasing crime rates, helping police solve crimes, and raising public awareness of the link between high illiteracy rates and high crime rates. The 2004 event benefited the following charities: Central Shenandoah Crime Stoppers, Friends of the Library from Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County, and the Shenandoah Valley Reading Council.

And on Saturday night, October 22nd, Officer Mark will be showing an Academy Award Nominated Documentary called “Colors Straight Up” in the Waynesboro High School Auditorium.

The movie is about a highly successful after-school program that keeps inner city kids off the streets by engaging them in music, acting and dancing. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated to help fund literacy programs.The film is 93 minutes long; please make plans to attend!

Waynesboro Public High School is located just five minutes from three different interchanges off of I-64, and is centrally located in Virginia, convenient to Northern Virginia, Tidewater, western mountains, Bristol to the south and Winchester to the north.

At the time the event is scheduled, the fall foliage will be at its peak. Waynesboro is located just five minutes from Skyline Drive and is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

There are two entrances used for the event. The main entrance, in the back of the building, is used for folks arriving in private vehicles.

 

The bus entrance is located at the front of the building. Buses (i.e., senior citizens groups and student field trips) are also encouraged. Ample bus parking is provided.

The book fair is held in the school's gymnasium. There are four to six rows of authors with 6-8 foot tables and ample space for attendees to visit with authors, peruse the books, and get them autographed.

The auditorium is located just down the hall from the signing room.

This room is used for panel discussions, which include the background stories of authors and the writing of their books, how to get published, and other topics of interest. It seats 900.

There are a number of activities for children facilitated by children's authors, such as this one pictured above with author Alison Hart, author of more than 18 children's books, with the Case of the Missing Necklace.

Police will be on hand to fingerprint children and take their photographs...

 

and provide free gunlocks and useful information.

 

The cafeteria is transformed into a food court, and several food vendors will be on hand.

Located at the entrance to the food court are vending machines also. There are also vending machines located throughout the hallways.

This is the Cashier window located near the main entrance and just across from the food court and gift wrapping services. Purchases are paid for at this window. We accept cash, checks, Visa and MasterCard.
